Kathmandu/  Nepal has taken a significant step toward accelerating its digital transformation with a landmark $29 million investment in broadband and data infrastructure.

In a major partnership, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Standard Chartered Bank Nepal Limited (SCBNL), and WorldLink Communications Ltd. — along with its data center subsidiary, Data World Limited — have come together to boost high-speed internet access and digital connectivity across the country.

Supported by the International Development Association’s Private Sector Window (IDA PSW), the investment will strengthen Nepal’s fiber-optic network and establish cutting-edge data centers, including the country's first EDGE-certified facility. These upgrades are expected to bridge the digital divide, enhance digital services, and create thousands of jobs across urban and rural areas.

“At WorldLink, we believe that connectivity is the bridge to opportunity,” said Dileep Agrawal, Founder and Chairman of WorldLink Communications. “This partnership with IFC and SCBNL marks a crucial step in our journey to build a digitally inclusive Nepal.”

The initiative aligns with Nepal’s 16th National Plan and Digital Nepal Framework, targeting universal internet access and integrated infrastructure development. By extending fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) technology and enabling more efficient data storage and processing, the partnership is set to drive digital inclusion and economic growth — especially in underserved communities.

“This investment will boost digital access and job creation, particularly in remote areas, while supporting Nepal’s economic transformation,” said Imad N. Fakhoury, IFC’s Regional Director for South Asia.

WorldLink’s new data center infrastructure will adhere to global sustainability standards, while also promoting gender inclusion in the workforce. The broader aim is to unlock economic opportunities through digital innovation and build a robust digital ecosystem that supports essential sectors, from education to healthcare and e-commerce.

“By financing digital infrastructures, we are unlocking global opportunities for Nepal and enabling access to digital services for all,” added Gorakh Rana, CEO & Head of Coverage at SCBNL.

With Nepal’s digital economy poised for rapid expansion, this partnership underscores a shared commitment to building a connected, inclusive, and future-ready nation.
